Do I need to get a police check to apply for cleaning jobs?

Why having a police check is useful for cleaning jobs?

As a cleaner, you may be asked to clean premises with children, the elderly and other vulnerable adults. You could also work in an environment that holds sensitive information and properties.
As part of your responsibilities as a cleaner, you may be a key holder and have alarm access codes for your clients.

Getting a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, or a police check adds to your credibility and gives the person for whom you are cleaning more confidence in giving you access to their premises.
You only need to get one basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate, and use this for multiple clients. Although, technically, there isn’t an end date for a police check we do recommend getting your basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check updated every 18mths – 3yrs.

You can apply online for a police check.

Here are the links for:
England: www.gov.uk/request-copy-criminal-record
Scotland: https://www.mygov.scot/basic-disclosure/apply-for-basic-disclosure
Northen Ireland https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/accessni-criminal-record-checks

To apply for a basic DBS check you’ll need:

  • all your addresses for the last 5 years and the dates you lived there
  • your National Insurance number
  • your passport
  • your driving licence
